Running can be the difference between a happy or sad winter. Research reveals that running outdoors is one of the best ways to banish the traditional winter blues because runners benefit from increased feel-good hormones. Being outside for at least 20 minutes in daylight each day is also a recipe for enhanced mental well-being.
Added to this, runners benefit from an enhanced immune system, which helps them to see off colds and flu.
But running through the winter does require a few items of warmer clothing. Perhaps you’ll treat yourself to new fitness clothing, such as running tights, long-sleeved running tops and waterproof jackets, or why not buy your favourite runner a great running gift for Christmas?
Great buys from RunUrban for this winter and Christmas
* Great stocking fillers for runners: Ronhill Vizion LED light at £6; Precision Training 2000 Stopwatch, £12.50; High 5 Zero electrolyte sports drink, Cherry/Citrus/Cherry and Orange at £7 a tube; Nathan Training Log Book at £10; 1000 mile Glastonbury Ultimate Phone/MP3 carrier, £14; Addux sports headphones, £20; and a truly amazing range of running socks.

Are you faking it, or growing a real one? Do you have your trainers and warm winter running kit looked out? With Movember just around the corner, we’re looking forward to seeing hundreds of Mo’ Brothers and Mo’ Sistas preparing their moustaches for the first ever Scottish Mo Running 5K event. Taking place on Sunday November 20 at 10.30am in Glasgow Green, the 5k is part of the countrywide annual charity campaign raising awareness of Men’s Health, and in particular prostate cancer.
Dave Krangel, Mo Running Race Director, talks excitedly about Mo running fever. He says: “Mo running has spread like facial hair, boldly growing at an unexpected pace.”
Last year was the official launch of Mo Running with runs taking place in London, Milton Keynes, Dublin and Melbourne, Australia.
Now it’s Scotland’s chance to dress up and go with the Mo
Krangel added: “As the Mo Running community is building we want you to join us, get in the Mo Running spirit, spread the word and start calling yourself a Mo Runner. It’s all about fun, getting together with friends, family and work colleagues whilst supporting a great cause.”
To register for the Glasgow Mo run visit: Glasgow Mo Entry is £15, of which 10% goes directly to the Movember campaign. Entries received before October 31 have the chance of winning an Ipod.

We're excitedly looking forward to sponsoring our first event at the end of this month - and we have been delighted to see just how popular running races are becoming. We are sponsors of The Southside Six, which takes place in Glasgow on Sunday October 30, and so far the event organisers have seen entries sell out not once but three times!
Each time the race sold out, the organisers were able to extend entries until the maximum of 350 participants was reached. So we’re really looking forward to being at the event – and cheering on all the runners.
The inaugural Southside Six will see runners racing 16 miles through six of the city’s parks. The brainchild of city runners Alan McDermid and Nick Vaughan, the event takes in Queen’s Park, King’s Park, Linn Park, Rouken Glen Park, Pollok Country Park and Bellahouston Park.
The aim of the event is to offer something completely new and different to runners, and also to showcase a great way to explore the green spaces of the southside of Glasgow.

Grow a moustache, or fake one (depending on your capabilities!) and get set to Go With Mo' in Glasgow. The first ever 5k Mo Run takes place at Glasgow Green on Sunday November 20 at 10.30am.
The Glasgow Green 5K is the latest addition to the Mo Running series created by The Fix UK to help support the Movember charity campaign, which raises awareness of men’s health issues, in particular, prostate cancer. All Mo Running participants are encouraged to dress up and grow (or wear) a moustache.
Dave Krangel, Mo Running Race Director, says: "Mo Running fever has spread like facial hair, boldly growing at an unexpected pace! 2010 saw the official launch of Mo Running with runs taking place in London, Milton Keynes and Dublin and all the way down under in Melbourne, Australia.
“Now it’s Scotland’s chance to dress up and go with Mo’. We’re excited to be bringing the Mo Running event north of the border and expect hundreds of Mo’ Brothers and Mo’ Sistas pounding the pavements of Glasgow Green in aid of men’s health.
“As the Mo Running community is building we want you to join us, get in the Mo Running spirit, spread the word and start calling yourself a Mo Runner. It’s all about fun, getting together with friends, family and work colleagues whilst supporting a great cause."
To register visit Mo Running Entry is £15.00 – 10% of which goes directly to the Movember campaign. And don't foget to visit RunUrban for a great choice of running fotwear and clothing. You will need the right kit for running in winter (although your 'tache will at least keep your face warm!).
